This is a magnificent example of a 1930s cut-out work, organza dress in really pristine vintage condition. It is an archetypal 1930s shirt-waister design that reaches ankle length and has a full A-line skirt. The entire design is a repeat cut out and embroidered floral pattern in stiffened organza cotton. This is a clever design whereby the bolero jacket is made to look like a separate part of the dress; however, it is actually joined at the side seams and across the shoulders. The design has tapered puff sleeves and opens to the front of the bodice with popper fastenings. For decoration, 3 original glass buttons have been placed along the button stand. There is further access along the waist side seam whereby there are additional poppers. The dress has a V neck collar but rounded lapels in keeping with the more feminine look of the piece. We have added a new organza scalloped ribbon as a belt as we felt this was a perfect accompaniment to the dress.
This piece would make an absolutely extraordinary wedding dress but on the other hand, would look equally good at a formal event or a summer garden party. Condition wise it's perfect - there are no marks or breaks in the organza that we can see. This dress would have been worn with a matching cotton underdress originally and presents absolutely beautifully worn alone for a more daring look. 1930s dresses of quality remain long standing investment pieces and are increasingly scarce. It is a best fit for up to a UK size 8 or US or US 4. Our model is a UK 6-8 and 5ft 4in. (163cm) and this outfit was a good fit on her.
